BT is slowly upgrading millions of homes across the UK to its all-fiber broadband network. The company, which has lowered the price of its TV packages, has revealed the latest batch of nearly 200 locations that are expected to benefit from its gigabit connection. If you’re wondering if you’ll be able to enjoy those super-fast download speeds soon, here’s what you need to know.

Openreach, owned by BT, is responsible for upgrades. It hopes to reach some 25 million premises by December 2026. As part of these extensive upgrades, the next 170 new locations across the UK have been revealed.

Gigabit-enabled fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) connections differ from regular broadband – sometimes advertised as “fiber broadband” in advertisements – because faster (and more reliable) fiber-optic cables connect directly to the router. of your house. This contrasts with the old connections that ran from the fiber-optic infrastructure to the green communication boxes you see on the streets of the UK, leaving the last few meters to your front door to be managed by copper cables older.

If you’re lucky enough to be in an area that offers gigabit broadband, you’ll be able to enjoy super-fast download speeds.

Virgin Media’s gigabit broadband offers average download speeds of 1130 Mbps (from £ 62 per month) while BT’s offering offers average downloads of 900 Mbps (£ 59.99 per month). The average UK broadband speed is 70 Mbps (as measured earlier this year), which means you’ll enjoy 16x faster downloads with the Virgin Media connection than the average broadband user .

BT’s full coverage currently covers around six million homes and businesses in the UK. The last time BT revealed an upgrade to its gigabit broadband plans was in June 2021, when the telecommunications giant announced that 551 new towns, villages and towns would benefit from FTTP services.

BT has not issued an official press release on these plans, however, internet-obsessed blog ISPreview has compiled a list of all new locations with gigabit broadband between April 2021 and December 2026.
