GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Robert Hight topped Saturday’s Funny Car qualifying at the Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals in his bid to open the season with three straight wins.

Hight clocked 3.831 seconds at 333.41 mph in a Chevrolet Camaro for his first No. 1 qualifier of the season and 72nd overall. He opened the season with wins at Pomona, Calif., and Chandler, Arizona.

“I honestly didn’t expect to be No. 1,” Hight said. “We just needed to have a good run to have a solid starting base for tomorrow. Tomorrow, we will have to catch up a little but when we do that, it will work even better. This thing is amazing – 14 out of 15 runs it’s gone in the 3.80s.

Tripp Tatum led the Top Fuel peloton, Aaron Stanfield topped the Pro Stock lineup, and Matt Smith earned first place in Pro Stock Motorcycle based on last season’s points.

Tatum raced to his first career No. 1 qualifier, posting the fastest run in track history with a 3.674-331.53 assist.

Points leader Stanfield made the fastest run in Pro Stock electronic fuel injection history with his record-breaking 6.468-211.66 run in a Camaro.

Pro Stock Motorcycle qualifying could not be completed on Saturday.

Steve Torrence, Brittany Force, Mike Salinas and Justin Ashley won the first round races of the Pep Boys NHRA Top Fuel All-Star Callout. The final two rounds of the specialty event will conclude at the Dodge Power Brokers US National Championships in Indianapolis in September.
