The latest figures came from 17,791 PCR tests and 10,337 rapid antigen tests.

While the number of recorded cases is already high, health authorities believe the actual number of cases is much higher due to the testing system’s inability to keep up with demand.

It comes as nearly 100,000 Victorians have received word from testing clinics telling them their samples are no longer valid for testing due to the long wait.

As the omicron variant continued to spread across the country, 23% of eligible Victorians received their booster shot.

Health officials believe the third booster shot is the most effective defense against the Omicron variant, as thousands of double-vaccinated people fall ill with the last strain.

Fully vaccinated people are even less likely to become seriously ill with a majority of hospitalizations identified as unvaccinated.
